This 25 gram Black Thermochromic Pigment, or Heat Sensitive Paint powder is a great pigment for Custom Paint! It is called thermochromic pigment or Heat Changing Paint. You can now create dazzling effects that change color when the temperature of the item changes. This Black Thermochromic Paint is being used in everything from toys to choppers to home interiors. Many are experimenting with it to create the ultimate home efficient roofing, because it could literally change from black to white when the temperature was hot. Mix into any clear base coat (like a binder or color blender), and spray over your desired graphics or base coat color. See our article, How To Mix Custom Paint.

As mentioned in our article about temperature change paint, this product requires a great deal of UV protection in order to create a lasting effect in outdoor environments. We recommend Wet Wet Plus clear or another highly UV protective clear for outdoor or exterior use. Because this paint is dependent on UV protection, we offer no warrantee on it’s longevity, since that depends on how you topcoat it. Tip: using this Black Thermochromic paint underneath Ghost Pearl ® or Chameleon Pearls ® will help increase it’s tolerance to UV rays as well, as pearls are made with titanium oxide, a principle ingredient in sunscreen protectants. We have the easiest Thermochromic Pigment to use on the web.

Thermochromics change color dramatically (even from black to white) as the temperature changes. Ours are set to change at 86 degrees F. This Black Thermochromic Paint pigment can be used in everything from custom paint to clothing. Our pigments have been used in everything from masks to motorcycles. Use in your own testing for a custom application!

Did you know magicians use thermochromic pigments in magic tricks?

Thermochromic paints change as the temperature changes. As the temperature goes up, the pigment becomes colorless, revealing the base coat or graphics underneath. The helmet shown was a white base with a black temperature sensitive paint sprayed over it.

Tips for Thermochromic Application:

Follow these tips to give yourself the best chance for a great application!

  • Paint at a temperature under 86 Degrees when using the 86 degree F paint. That way you can see what kind of coverage you are getting. Make sure the surface you are painting is also cool.
  • Remember, you can use color changing paints over any basecoats, including graphics. You can have a black car that changes to a yellow car with flames during the daylight. You can have graphics that dissapear when the car warms up, if you paint the graphics with the color changing paint.
  • You can add any pearls, candy paint pigments, or metal flakes right into the mix of color-change pigments, or topcoated over the color-change paint pigments. The good thing about that is the extra protection you get for UV, as our pearls contain Titanium Oxide, a principle ingredient in sunscreen protectants.
  • Do yourself a favor, don’t let your project sit around too long before you top-coat it with a high quality UV clear coat. Giving yourself a few extra coats of clear never hurts.

Our Responsibility for you, and for our Customers

As far as quality goes, we are proud to offer you this product, as we have heard many people complain about the cost that other paint manufacurers are charging for this exact same product, pre-mixed into a binder. Smart painters know that all paints are basically binders + pigments. So why pay someone an extra 300 dollars out of your pocket for the same thing?

Not only do we feel it is our responsibility to give you the best product at the best value, but we also want to provide you with as much information as possible to allow you to succeed and become a great artist, and that is why we offer you as much insight as we do in each product.

What you put our products on is not something that we can control. Due to the unique environment that our customers are applying them to, we must give you a full understanding of that limitations of this product. It is to create the safest application, the best results, and ensure that we are always at the highest level of integrity.

Application for Custom Paint

Many customers call and ask for a step by step guide for painting with this product. There are many factors that go into a paint job but I have put together a basic guide:

  • lay down the desired base coat color (best is white or brighter colors)
  • mix the 25 gram bag of thermo into a pint of reducer for 24 hours
  • add a pint of clear to the reducer to make a sprayable quart
  • spray 5-7 coats of thermo over base coat color
  • apply a good UV top coat clear 3-4 coats over that (you can add a ghost pearl to the clear for extra UV protection).

Do understand that if this is going to be applied to a surface that will have prolonged UV exposure or high heat exposure, this pigment will start to break down and fade to a hazy gray.

We cannot offer any guarantees on the life of this paint due to the UV and heat factors. There are too many variables that make it difficult to guarantee the life of this product.
